Is there some way to keep the formatting of the excerpt of the post on the grid? Currently it just pulls the text and there's no line breaks or anything so it's totally unacceptable.

Sorry to say excerpt has no formatting,
i would like to suggest following 3rd party plugin to play with excerpt

Basically excerpt doesn't allow any html tags, in our plugin there is a filter hook for filter excerpt, please check this

apply your own code for formatting.
