It would be nice to have something that allows users to reset/clear a search without having to make the field blank and hit 'return'.
Am I just overlooking a setting that allows for that?

Welcome to our forum.
Post Grid itself provides a very basic search functionality, although you can extend it by action hook and filter available. we have created a dummy addon for those users who want advance search and filter, please check this.
